I would like to emphasise the need to include moral education in our teaching right from the very beginning and it should go on as long as a child is in the school. This is necessary to inculcate in the hearts and minds of the children the value systems which have made India what it is and which must govern the thoughts and actions of the children when they grow up and become adults.
While we place a lot of emphasis on teaching the syllabus in each class we have generally not paid adequate attention to this aspect of education which is a must for the child to develop properly. While academics must continue to be the backbone of teaching in a school, education in the true sense of the word would be incomplete unless it also encompasses basic human values such as sharing, caring, respect for elders, truthfulness, compassion and many other such values.
